Buying your very first horse is one of the biggest and most emotional experiences for many horse lovers. A dream that may have existed since childhood has finally come true. Congratulations – you have just stepped into a fantastic world filled with joy, learning, and close relationships with your very own animal!
But it's also completely understandable if it feels a bit overwhelming. What do you really need to think about when the horse moves in? What must be in place? And how do you best prepare for this new everyday life in the stable?
The first thing you should think about.
Before the horse moves in, it's good to have control over the practical parts:
-
Do you have a stable place ready? Check that it is safe, clean, and that the horse gets enough outdoor time.
-
Is the horse insured? Make sure you have good horse insurance that covers both veterinary care and liability.
-
Do you have contact with a farrier and veterinarian? Feel free to create a small "care chain" right from the start.
What should you acquire?
To ensure you and your horse have a safe and pleasant start together, there are certain products that are especially good to have from day one. We have created a free checklist that you can download [here].

But here are some of the most important points:
Equipment for the horse:
- Halter and lead rope (preferably several, they are needed!)
- Saddle and bridle – preferably fitted
- Blankets for different weather
- Saddle pads, leg protection, and possibly boots
- Grooming kit, sponges, and hoof pick
For the stable and paddock:
- Water bucket or automatic
- Hay bags
- Feed buckets for concentrates
- Salt block
- First aid kit
- Storage for blankets and equipment
For you as a horse owner:
- Helmet, safety vest, and proper riding shoes
- Stable clothes for all weather
- A simple calendar or app to keep track of farrier, vaccinations, and training
Tips from us.
Remember that no one is fully learned – especially not at the beginning. Ask for help, ask questions in the stable, and don't feel silly if something feels new. Everyone has been a beginner at some point! And don't forget that the most important thing is that you and your horse have a good relationship where you grow together in safety and joy.
