John can be varied in strength depending on the horse's daily form. Fager's Baby fulmer provides stability to the mouthpiece and helps to clarify the rein action. It also protects the corners of the mouth from pinching. The rings are positioned further out from the mouthpiece, framing the horse and avoiding pressure on the cheek and cheek teeth.

With the rein in the large ring, John functions as a Baucher/snaffle bit. The rein in the lowest ring provides a gag and leverage function, this combination gives a more flexible and movable feel than fixed sidepieces.
