Carl flippan bit is ridden with a rein. The strength can be increased by moving the rein downwards, which gives more leverage effect. With the rein in the top part of the ring, the leverage disappears and the strength becomes the same as a baucher bit.

The mouthpiece is designed to follow the horse's natural shape and provide less constant pressure over the tongue. The design in combination with a short center plate takes up little space in the mouth and does not lie and irritate an already sensitive horse unnecessarily. The light weight makes it less rigid and increases acceptance.

Carl also suits a horse that is short between the bars and has a low palate.
