A popular model for horses that easily get pinched in the corners of the mouth by the bit rings. A funnel-shaped part along the bit acts as a kind of pacifier in the corner of the mouth, providing a soft transition and thereby minimizing the risk of the skin being pinched. Helps to keep the bit more still and stable in the mouth.

The bit guards are about 4mm thick and thus take away some of the bit's width, so it's important to check that the bit doesn't become too tight in the horse's mouth when the bit guards are on.
