Used carefully by knowledgeable riders to help the horse come into the correct form. It is attached to the girth either between the horse's front legs or on the sides, just below the saddle flaps, and runs through the bit rings to the rider's hand. Used together with a regular rein, the rider thus has double reins in their hands. Through this rein, the rider can determine almost exactly how the horse should hold its head. An optimally used graman rein shifts weight to the hindquarters and provides increased activity and tension in the horse. If the graman is used incorrectly, for example, riding solely on it without contact on the regular rein, it has the opposite effect. The horse will then become front-heavy and increase the load on the front legs.
