Calcium is an important mineral supplement for horses and plays a crucial role in bone strength, muscle function, and several vital processes in the body. As a macromineral, calcium is one of the most significant building blocks for the horse's durability and long-term health.

A large part of the body's calcium is stored in the skeleton and teeth, where it contributes to stability and proper development. Calcium is also necessary for the muscles' ability to contract and work efficiently, for cellular energy metabolism, and for blood clotting ability. A sufficient and balanced intake is therefore essential for both mobility and the body's normal functions.

Calcium and phosphorus must always be fed in the correct ratio to each other in order to be absorbed and used properly in the body. An appropriate ratio between calcium and phosphorus in the feed ration is between 1.2:1 and 1.8:1. An imbalance can be harmful and is especially critical for pregnant and lactating mares as well as young, growing horses where skeletal development places high demands on mineral balance.

A lack of calcium primarily affects the skeleton and can lead to reduced bone strength and osteoporosis. In growing horses, calcium deficiency can cause improper skeletal development with a risk of future joint and bone problems. With prolonged deficiency, the nervous system can also be affected, which may result in overexcited nerves and muscle cramps.

The maintenance requirement for an adult horse is about 4 grams of calcium per 100 kg body weight per day. Pregnant, lactating mares and growing horses have a higher requirement and may therefore need extra supplementation.

Calcium supplementation is recommended when the feed ration does not cover the horse's needs or when the calcium/phosphorus ratio needs to be adjusted to ensure a correct mineral balance. The product has no competition withdrawal period and should be dosed according to the calculated feed ration.

Dosage:
6 ml per 100 kg body weight per day, or according to the calculated feed ration.
