Loose rings provide direct contact with immediate release, where the pressure on the tongue and bars ceases as soon as the rider releases the rein and the bit returns to a neutral position in the horse's mouth.

Elliptical Lock Up is a three-piece mouthpiece with a locked, elliptically shaped center piece. It is sharper than the Control plate because the contact area with the tongue is smaller. This means that a horse that uses its tongue to push against the bit to take control will come back and tuck in its nose, making it easier to control. By locking the center piece, the nutcracker effect is prevented, resulting in less pressure on the horse's bars. In turn, this increases the pressure on the tongue slightly, making it a sharper bit than, for example, the Ported kernel.
